In the Remembrance of Said Nursi

Like lighthouses show the way to ships in the night, many just such men and women have appeared in Islamic history. Filled with love of Almighty God, they have become light-giving personalities like lighthouses. Through the superlative examples to others of their lives and through their advanced knowledge which they put into practice down to the finest details, they have become ‘exemplary models in the way of God.’

Said Nursi was one of these. He was known by many people as Bediuzzaman, the Wonder of the Age.

Today is the 47th anniversary of the death of Bediuzzaman Said Nursi.

Bediuzzaman Said Nursi was born in 1877 in eastern Turkiye and died in 1960 in Urfa in Turkiye.

Bediuzzaman displayed an extraordinary intelligence and ability to learn from an early age, completing the normal course of medrese ,a religious school, education at the early age of fourteen, when he obtained his diploma. He became famous for both his prodigious memory and his unbeaten record in debating with other religious scholars.

The Risale-i Nur Collection, which in Bediuzzaman’s words consists of the science of belief, forms a most valuable source for learning the true nature of today’s man. For his works dwell primarily and particularly on the need for man to know himself and his own nature. The sole source and support to secure this maturation, develop the human qualities, and make dominant virtue in man, is belief in God.

“The most exciting breakthroughs of the 21st century will not be on account of technology, but on account of the meaning of human beings and where man has arrived at being better understood.”

Focussing on man, Bediuzzaman took on himself as his aim and cause the realization of this breakthrough, way back at the beginning of the century, and then through his Risale-i Nur Collection. It is in this realism in his ideas that the reason Bediuzzaman has remained prominent through every period should be sought.

After completing a lifetime of almost a century, with every minute spent in the service of faith, Bediuzzaman Said Nursi departed from this world on the morning of March 23, 1960, with complete honor, dignity and victory, leaving behind him a work that would illuminate this and the forthcoming centuries and a love that would be handed over from generation to generation until eternity
